On Sunday, March 31, 32 Wakefield students accompanied by three teachers will depart for Luxembourg to begin the first leg of a 12-day tour of Central Europe that will include Alsace, the Swiss Alps, Liechenstein, Austria and the Rhineland of Germany.
This year’s trip is the 10th foreign trip organized by the school for students during the Easter break. Countries visited in previous years have included France (twice), Greece (twice), Great Britain, Canada, Ireland, Egypt and Italy.
According to Wakefield headmaster William Lynn, the first trip nine years ago was the best bargain of all. With a grant from the French Ministry of Culture, a Wakefield group of 50 students and teachers was able to tour France for nine days for only $389 total, including air fare.
Since then, Lynn says, the costs have increased rather dramatically, but are still good bargains at student group rates. Are the trips worthwhile? Lynn believes they are of immense educational and cultural value: history, geography and art classes rolled into one, with lots of fun and adventure thrown in.
