thus produce symptoms of depression: irregularities of sleep and appetite, listlessness and general lessening of energy and interest at work or school. There is evidence that anti-depressive drugs work by making these amines available for enhanced brain message transmission through the central nervous system. Alcohol and “drugs” have the opposite effect.
Dr. William E. Bunney, chief of the biological psychiatry group of the National Institute of Mental Health and a renowned researcher in the biochemistry of manic-depression says that there is considerable evidence that there are strong genetic factors in depression. If we could identify vulnerable “at-risk” groups of children, then we could start preventive measures early in life. At least 309c of people who try suicide are from families who have had suicides or depression in their background. If a high index of suspicion is maintained and psychosomatic complaints such as headache, unexplained pains and unusual behavior are taken as a real cry for help, some of these children can be saved.
The thought of a nuclear holocaust may be a factor in some suicides but I doubt it very much. These children are not afraid of dying, they are afraid of living in this mixed-up world which we have created for them. The erosion of the religious view of man in the last years of the second millennium is slowly working serious changes in every fold and field of life. Rationalistic science is provoking revision after revision of traditional theological concepts. The waning of institutional religions is resulting in these more private religious or cults of every description which the young are grabbing as they key to survival. The rest of this century may yet bring about a religion which will give man a world view, a hierarchy of importances, an auguring place where he may find out what to do, free to think, in short a total explanation and meaning of man.
