Best always to focus on the good, and so I shall sing my praises to a Saturday night dinner at Brambles.

The night began on a distinctly positive note when a gracious hostess charmed me all the way to my candlelit table. From there I had a full view of the exposed kitchen, which heightened my anticipation of things to come and distracted me not a little.

The menu was alluring enough, but it could not command the eye when Filet Mignon sizzled on the grill in plain sight. I register this not as a complaint but again as a distraction, a luxurious annoyance.

The serenity imposed by candlelight served to calm my anxiety as the waitress approached and asked if I would have either beer or wine. This first decision is crucial since a mishap in choice may well di rient the palate for the entire night.

I reflected over the assortment of imported and domestic beers, settling on this one then that one then none at all. Finally I selected the house wine, Chablis Blanc, which to my surprise was exquisitely dry yet not pretentiously so. I was off to a good start.

Then I was presented with a generous straw basket of well-warmed wheat dinner rolls, followed by a crisp and uncommonly fresh dinner salad. I considered it a worthy first salad of spring - a not insignificant distinction.
