Fresh Manure Added
To prepare the bed for the first planting, the soil is dug out to a depth of 18 inches with care taken so as not to disturb the natural top-to-bottom striation. One foot of fresh, wet manure is added, then six inches of soil put back on top. “The manure should be really fresh,” Gottlieb emphasized. “Preferably from a bam cleaned that day.”
As the manure ferments, it generates warmth. It also puts fertilizer in the root zone.
In Blackwater’s cold frames, the first crop is planted in early October. “The seeds germinate faster then and by the time cold weather arrives we have a lush growth,” noted Margaret Gottlieb. A second planting goes in in mid-February. “And that will keep us in greens until the garden starts producing,” she added.
