It was a spectacular victory in a spectacular race for Ms. Cunningham and her competitive mount who also won the Mary D. Slaughter open timber race at Rappahannock three weeks ago. “I’m very pleased with the way he went,” said Ms. Cunningham after the race. “He was so rateable. I could slow him for the turns and open him up in the straights. “He’s a big-striding fast horse when you open him up. He really showed he had the distance today. To have that finish was just great.” Ms. Cunningham also won the Rappahannock old-fashioned last year over a slightly different course and on a different horse, also owned by Mr: Brown. Ms. Dugan and Sharp Start were second closely followed by Mr. Gunnell and Tregaron. Finishing in fourth place, a distance behind, was Bobby Green of Casanova riding Honey Dunce. Mr. Green failed to circle the second flag on the backside of the course and was disqualified, however. This left fourth place open to Lanny Simmons of Amissville on George. Ms. Simmons won the Warrenton old-fashioned two weeks ago and currently leads the four-race series by one point over Ms. Cunningham and Roman Hunt.
