Brown delivers approximately 800 pieces of mail a day, so it is no wonder that at times the wrong mail is placed in a box. There have been no mistakes as far as Brown’s driving is concerned.
Despite hazardous winter roads and the problems when the back roads begin to thaw in the spring, Brown has never had more than a fender bender while on duty. “I remember once a woman said, The roads are so bad that the only one who can get through is the rural carrier’,” Brown said.
Brown is the only rural carrier for the Sperryville Post Office, and he drives his own car to make deliveries. He receives a payment based on his mileage..
Brown has also received awards for his driving record. He received the Expert Driver 20 Year Award and he was named the Driver of the Month when he had 27 years of experience.
“If I make it to July without an accident, I’ll get the Million Mile Award for Safe Driving,” Brown said. After he earns that award, Brown said that he plans to retire as soon as the weather begins to get cold again. “I could change my mind,” Brown said.
And after 30 years of driving, what does Brown plan to do when he retires? “I’ve got a little camper, and I want to try to get on the road some,” Brown said.
