In mid-1983 the subcommittee recommended the establishment of a horse center and started to take bids gether the community support and enthusiasm behind the Rockbridge proposal was very much in favor of the subcommittee’s decision. And, of course, it’s a beautiful site.
“If you look at what has been done here to get this center, you know that you can dare to dream. It’s a team effort that shows what can be done.”
The Rockbridge County proposal, made with the support of the towns of Lexington and Buena Vis*-*, promised to give the state a 361-a . j tract, valued at $695,000, for the multi-purpose center plus at least $885,000 towards its construction.
A private organization, the Committee for the Virginia Horse Center, provided most of the lobbying for the Rockbridge site. Heading this committee was Lexington Realtor, Otis Mead.
“We are absolutely ecstatic about how everything went today,” Mr. Mead said after the bill-signing ceremonies. “Everything has worked out very very well. My committee members are absolute champions.”
