Thirteen years ago Ann Spieker founded the girls track team at Rappahannock High School. Why say anything more?
People who found towns are known simply as “founders of towns” and that is achievement enough to secure them a place in history.
Same goes for founders of track teams. Well, why shouldn’t it? What is the founding of a town compared to the founding of a track team? You're absolutely right: nothing.
People gladly settle in a town. The founder just stands there on Main Street — which in fairness he may have built — and welcomes people to the community. So what?
Try founding a track team. Try convincing 75 young men and women that it is in their interest to do one, two, maybe three of the following: • lug a ball of iron around and constantly shove it into the air • throw regularly the heaviest frisbee in the world • vault to dangerous heights like a guinea pig shot out of cannon • run dreadfully long distances until almost sick • run terribly short distances at breakneck speeds until almost dead • risk high speed collisions with hurdles 7 or 8 times within 100 meters.
