The Virginia Wildlife Federation’s primary objectives, according to its policy, include:
• Educating the public about conservation. The National Wildlife Federation’s theme this year is “Soil: We Can’t Grow Without It.” The national organization has distributed more than 9,000 education kits to schools across the nation.
• Cooperating with “agencies or organizations, public or private, that concern themselves with the sound management and wise use of our natural resources.”
• Influencing elected and appointed officials. The organization pushes for qualified personnel to fill all such positions.
• Conserving resources while allowing “the broadest possible use consistent with the general health of the the resource and its permanent preservation for present and future generations, and the high quality of each user’s experience.”
Dr. Branscome says the federation is not as radical as organizations such as the Sierra Club, which opposes intensive uses and management of natural resources.
The Wildlife Federation, for example, believes hunting — and in this area, doe hunting — is necessary to properly manage an exploding deer population.
