By now, all of the trout fishermen are readying their gear, tying flys, checking waders for leaks and trying to unglue all of last year’s plastic worms from the tackle box.
. Reports are starting to trickle in about crappie catches, but this newest cold front will probably slow them down a little. Fishing tiny minnows 810 feet deep was the answer for some of the buys I’ve talked to this week, while chartruese grubs produced well for a couple of Loudoun County fishermen at Difficult Run. Crappie are fickle, and what you do well with one day, won’t get a nibble the next.
Remember that trout season opens at noon Saturday, April 6. Without some additional rain between now and then, the trout will be super spooky with the relatively clear water, so dress in drab colors, or even camouflage clothing. Leave that bright yellow fishing hat at home and you’ll catch more fish.
