For the past four years the school trips have been conducted by Dr. Robert Bums, head of the European office of Educational Tours, Ltd. Bums, former head of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Alabama, knows exactly what the students should see and how to show it to them, Lynn said.
According to Lynn, Dr. Bums understands that students are highly physical beings who need play and recreation in between learning. He cites an example from last year’s trip to France. The students, after having spent the morning studying examples of Gothic architecture and viewing the Bayeux Tapestry, were left free to spend an entire afternoon roaming the Normandy beaches and playing in the bunkers.
