The Fauquier Planning Commission will hold a public hearing Thursday on a proposed zoning amendment that would allow the county to monitor the application of sewage sludge on farmland.
The planners are expected to favorably recommend some version of the amendment to the Fauquier supervisors.
The proposal, modeled after the State Water Control Board’s regulations governing the use of the farm fertilizer substitute, would charge applicants $50 permit fee and $2 for each acre on which the sludge is applied.
Revenues generated by such fees would pay for the administrative costs and the monitoring program, which could include pre- and post-sludge application studies of the soil and ground and surface water in the area affected.
