possible to colliding with the hurdle yet not touch it. Sounds like fun, huh?

And here’s the clincher. Try telling the young men and women that they are supposed to perform these feats three months out of the year, five days a week, for two hours a day.

Good news, folks. The dirty work has been done. Spieker got about 7E people to do all those things. That’s why it’s enough to say she founded the track team and leave it at that.

Oh, another thing. Spieker also has coached for 13 years, ever since founding the team. That’s an E for effort and a U for unbelievable.

Last year Spieker was named head coach of both the girls and the boys teams. Both teams were undefeated in the regular season. Not bad.

Question. What does she do for an encore?

Can the team go undefeated again?

“I hope so,” she said. “Those kids work hard. I’m really pleased with the attitude and determination of the whole team.”

Spieker said the team was fortunate to have some very talented newcomers. “They should do real well.”

She gave the following rundown of returning talent.

In the shot and the discus Donna Williams, Connie Compton and Wendy Stringfield “should do very well. They’re already putting the shot over 30 feet.” A girl from Strasburg probably will be their only competition.

In the long jump Kathryn Davis is the “returning power.” She placed last year.

Kelly Bristol and Anita DelGrosso both are returning letterwomen in the hurdles. This season will feature a new event: 300 meter low hurdles. The hurdles in the 100 meter event will be raised to intermediate height (33') rather than the traditional low height (30').
