Winter begins oil

Winter officially begins in the northern hemisphere with the winter solstice, on Saturday, December 21, at 5:08 p.m. eastern standard time. At this moment, the sun reaches its southernmost point in the sky.
Accoridng to Dr. Paul H. Knappenberger, Jr., director of the Science Museum of Virginia, “this is the day when the sun can be seen directly overhead at noon on the Tropic of Capricorn. The north pole of the earth is tipped as far away from the sun as possible. Therefore, the sun is above the horizon the shortest amount of time this year, for the northern hemisphere.”
Solstice means “sun-standing,” since this is the point where the sun stops moving north, in the summer, or south, in the winter, and begins moving in the opposite direction, as it continues its orbit.
From now on, days will gradually grow longer, and nights shorter, as the earth approaches the vernal equinox in the spring.
This lengthening of days was the focus of many ancient holiday celebrations, such as the Roman Saturnalia and the German Yule. These people held lavish feasts and ceremonies to celebrate the longer days, and the coming of spring.
Through January 5, the Science Museum of Virginia’s holiday planetarium show in UNIVERSE, “The Star of Bethlehem,” examines these ancient customs, as well as the origin of the famous star. The planetarium show is a multi-media presentation, produced by members of the UNIVERSE staff. Shows play at 2 and 7 p.m. daily.
The Science Museum of Virginia is located at 2500 West Broad Street in Richmond. The museum exhibit areas are open from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. UNIVERSE shows play at 1, 3, and 8 p.m. daily, with noon and 5 p.m. showings added on Saturday and Sunday. Admission to the exhibit areas only is $2 for adults and $1.50 for senior citizens and those 17 and under. Parking is free.
