leader in helping smokers quit and teaching children never to start. Smoking is the single largest preventable cause of premature death and disability in America. Every year 35,000 Americans die prematurely from diseases caused by cigarette smoking.
Smoking also accounts for an estimated $16 billion in direct health care expenses every year, $3.8 billion of which are for Medicare and Medicaid programs connected with the care of the aged, disabled and indigent persons with smoking-related diseases. There is an additional annual cost of $26 billion in lost productivity, wages and absenteeism.
