Christmas has many traditions associated with it, and many of these customs involve plants. Most of our customs have come from Europe. They have made holly, mistletoe, poinsettia, evergreens, the'"' Christmas tree, and the yule log symbols of the season.
In the folklore of the world, holly has meant many things. The ancient Romans carried holly in their processions, and decked images of their deities with its glistening leaves. Besides using the plant as a religious decoration, the ancients offered branches to their own people as symbols of friendship. In medieval England, holly was kept in the home or on the person to protect against witchcraft. In Germany, holly was a church decoration that was taken home to ward off lightning. In more recent times, it has been used very commonly in England as decoration during the Christmas season. This custom was brought to the U.S. by the English settlers. In this country, holly has become the Christmas symbol of joy and merriment.
