snow jumper Katie Monahan of Upperville won the Horsewoman of the Year award along with pony breeder Barbara Camp of Nellysford.
“It really was a surprise,” Ms. Monohan said of her award. “It is an honor to win this because it’s an award that is not based on points earned or money won, but on the votes of your peers.”
On the show jumping circuit this year Ms. Monohan has also won several awards for her riding. She guided Mrs. Averill Harriman’s The Governor to the top of the earnings standings of the American Grandprix Association and the Horse of the Year award and also won the Rolex Crown of Excellence as the leading lady rider on the circuit, an award she has won three of the last four years.
“I am so enthusiastic about our sport in this country,” Ms. Monahan said of American show jumping. “It is so thrilling the amount of money that is coming into it and the prices 1 horses are beginning to bring. The first million dollar show jumper was sold the other day. I am anticipating speeding up my riding for next year and riding more. I am aiming to have six horses on the circuit next year so I can ride in every event. ”
