proximately 11,518 systems analysts employed in Virginia and, by 1990, the number of analysts employed in our state is expected to reach 19,345. Each year between now and 1990, there will be 968 projected job openings in this field (including jobs due to growth and replacement). The great majority of these openings are expected to be in the Northern Virginia area.
Computer systems analysts help devise efficient patterns of information flow from their source to the computer. They also define the computer process necessary to turn rawdata into useful information, plan the distribution and use of the results obtained from the computer, and test the working system in operation. Their typical duties include consulting with engineering, scientific, or management personnel to define the problem; studying the problem and deciding upon the best techniques to solve it (i.e. cost accounting, sampling, or model building); gathering the information needed to solve the. problem (data base management); writing and in terpreting the results in non-technical language that managers or customers can understand; and recommending the data processing equipment to be used in new systems installations.
Most employers require at least a bachelor’s degree of people applying for this position. Many also prefer candidates already skilled in com puter programming.
