Can openers, the first of appliances designed to be fastened under a wall cabinet are now joined by a host of under-the-cabinet appliances.
Shoppers will find under-the-cabinet blenders, mixers, toasters, toaster-ovens, knives, coffeemakers, microwave ovens, and a food preparation center that acts either as a food processor or a blender.
The advantage of an under-thecabinet appliance is that it is compact and can help keep the counter or work space uncluttered "while keeping the appliance handy to use.
There is, however, a limit to under-the-cabinet space just as for counter space. That is just one of the factors buyers need to keep in mind, said Janice E. Woodward, Virginia Tech Extension specialist in home management.
Some under-the-cabinet appliances hang down far enough to limit the amount of usable work space under the appliance.
