Ever since 1907, when public health pioneer Emily Bissell had the first few Christmas Seals printed to fund a crusade against tuberculosis, Christmas Seals have been more and more widely used until they have become an American tradition. Today, Christmas Seals with the familiar double-barred cross are mailed annually to more than 60 million homes throughout the United States. They are symbols of America’s determination to eradicate such lung diseases as lung cancer, asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis and tuberculosis, wherever TB is still a threat. *
The oldest nationwide voluntary public health agency in the United States, dating back to its origin as the National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis in 1904, the American Lung Association (ALA) today sponsors research and educational programs on all lung diseases and combats many of their causes, including smoking, air pollution and occupational lung hazards.
