for me the Christ event that is celebrated at Christmas is more than a symbol, in that it is something that actually occurred in the unfolding of history. Yet my sense is that people’s connection to the story has more to do with what it symbolizes to them than just the story itself.
Along these lines, I guess that many people this Christmas will be able to celebrate the birth with all its joy and hope and love, but that many people will also look forward to the passing of Christmas, because they are not ready for that birth.
As we all know, birth happens in its own time — it is something you can only prepare for. A woman can prepare for childbirth, but she never knows exactly the timing. It is the same with Christ’s birth. It happens in its own time.
Any new birth that takes place is accompanied by pain. But as we get distanced from it, it can take on new meaning in our memories of it.
To me, the most important thing, or the last thing, is that Christmas — the Christ event — demands a response from us. The reason I can say that is that birth always demands a response.”
