1 he yule log usually comes Irom an oak tree, but fruit trees are also used. Logs are cut and brought to the home to be burned on Christmas Eve. If you have a fireplace, the yule log might be a tradition you would enjoy beginning with family and friends.
In England, each man tips his hat as he passes the log in a sign of respect as it represents the good things to come. The flames bum out all old wrongs, replacing them with happiness and good cheer. The people of southern France also use the yule log, but they pour an offering of wine on it before lighting.
New customs, even those as fine as the decorating of Christmas trees, often receive strong resistance when first introduced. But hot tempers cool, enthusiasm grows, and new practices become old traditions. Regardless of their origin, holly, mistletoe, poinsettias, evergreens, and the Yule log have become an integral and important part of our annual celebration.
