To avoid late payments, wool and lamb producers must turn in their 1985 sales receipts and file an application by January 31st.
Farmers who have a record of their wool sales are eligible for incentive payments only if the sales are reported to the ASCS office. The quantity sold does not affect the eligibility. However, sales slips should contain the month of shearing, month of sale, number of head shorn, pounds of wool (grease basis) and net proceeds. Shorn wool payments will be made only for bonafide sales documented on invoices prepared by the purchaser. Sales slips for lambs must show the liveweight and state that the lambs were unshorn; also the purchaser’s name, address and buyer’s code.
Shorn wool payments are based on a percentage of each producer’s returns from sales. The percentage is the amount required to raise the national average price received by all producers for shorn wool.
Pulled wool will continue to be supported at a level comparable to the price support level for shorn wool through payments on unshorn lambs.
The program is designed to encourage sheep growers to do their best job of marketing and to improve the quality of fibers.
