Virginia litter
John V. Jackson, Commissioner of the Virginia Division of Litter Control, announced today that grant monies totaling $4,552.00 have been awarded locally for litter control programs. Receiving litter control grants were the following towns: The Plains in the amount of $300 and Orange in the amount of $737.
Also the Cooperative Program of Fauquier County and Remington was awarded a grant in the amount of $3,515. •r All Virginia cities, counties, and incorporated towns are eligible for litter control grant funds. These funds may be used to implement such comprehensive programs as The Virginia Plan: A Model Program to Prevent Littering. This five-part program consists of planning and organization, communications, education, sustained cleanup, and law enforcement.
Monies may also be used for a variety of litter control and prevention activities including hiring area coordinators, establishing citizens committees, and developing recycling programs.
The State’s Litter Control Program has grown steadily since its beginnings in 1977. “We have made tremendous progress through the effort of litter control leadership in the localities,” said Jackson. “We anticipate 95 percent of Virginia’s cities and counties, and over 80 percent of the towns, to participate this year. No other state in the nation has this kind of involvement.
