The contrast between the origin and destination of my journey is worth thinking about. No-one can fault the home-bound commuters for being ornery. They were being herded like cattle, overcharged for inferior transport, delayed by abysmally obsolete rail cars, and made altogether miserable by a system that seems surprised by the fact that in the wintertime it snows...They wouldn’t put up with all this in Rappahannock County. There, the livestock outnumber the people by a comfortable ratio. And, in general, the people are smarter than cowbrutes, leaving a visitor to that cherished place with the impression that they mean to keep the ratio pretty much the way it is now.
