Since the middle of last week, when the stories about the Finders first broke, news accounts have been rife with horror tales of sexually abused, malnourished and neglected children, child pornography rings, brainwashing and Satanism^The Finders are referred to as*a cult, with all the connotations of Charles Manson and Jonestown that this emotionally loaded term now carries.
Stories on the front pages of local and national papers, from The Washington Post to the Culpeper Star-Exponent, tied the yet-to-be-substantiated charges together with “may have," “might be” and “possibly.”
Last week, coverage was stridently alarmist in tone, but each day, as more of the facts have unfolded, the more inflammatory accusations have been dropped, one by one.
“I’m embarrassed for the news media,” said Dr. Hunter Adams, a Northern Virginia physician who has known members of the Finders for 14 years. “They’ve really made a mistake here. I can see a giant legal case coming out of this.”
In a telephone interview with The Rappahannock News Monday afternoon, he likened the handling of the Finders story by
