The Delineator, 1918
While the true origin of St. Valentine’s Day may be forever lost in history, the legend of St. Valentine lives on. He was believed to be a Roman priest who was imprisoned and put to death because he defied Emperor Claudius II’s decree and secretly married young lovers. The Emperor had banned marriage because he believed that it made men want to stay home with their wives instead of fighting wars.
