Often, developers and industrial types are viewed as farmers’ adversaries, but these people “can provide overhead” and contribute to a cooperative’s success, he said.
The broccoli program has been profitable, but it didn’t happen overnight, Mr. Coale said. The cooperative involved a lot of planning and education. Even with all the emphasis that was placed on producing broccoli, farmers still ran into problems from early freezes, floods or bugs.
