Most tractor accidents, he says, are caused not by inexperience, but by carelessness resulting from too much experience. “When you’ve been operating a machine for a long period of time, things become automatic. You stop thinking about which lever to move, you just do it.” People become less alert, and when emergencies arise, they can’t respond quickly, or in the right way.
Accidents also result when the operator is distracted (by a neighbor waving, for instance, or by family problems), or is less able to concentrate on the job due to extreme cold or heat, medication, alcohol, or drugs.
“The thing is to get eVeryone to think of the consequences of his or her actions.” Mr. Hetzel has also trained farmers and rescue squads on safe methods of extricating people trapped in machinery. He is currently working on a survey of the number of farmers or farm workers in Virginia who are physically disabled, and who may be helped by changes in machinery design.
