He said that, with practice, his students advance - at their own pace - through a system of belts. “The belts provide a fair measure of the extent of their knowledge,” he explained.
“Ability and enthusiasm are the keys to advancement,” he continued. “The kids have got to put out, be sincere about their training.” But, he added, no one pushes them. “TTiey can go as fast or as slow as they want . . . It’s not football. It’s an exercise in the development of a child’s character.”
The inner-directedness of the competition, he maintains, “brings forth more camaraderie among the students than all-out competition against each other.”
In addition to his class at the Child Care and Learning Center, Mr. Drago also has classes for children at the Morrisville VFW Hall in Fauquier County, St. John’s Church and Chestnut Forks Fitness Club in Warrenton, and the Front Royal Karate Club in Front Royal. He also teaches classes for adults at the club in Front Royal.
