Lyn Baines reported that teachers polled in the RCEA survey chose improved psychological services as the most critical need in the county’s educational program. Those services were cut this year “and we’re paying a price,” she said. “Teachers can no longer walk into the office and discuss a problem student with the psychologist . . . because the psychologist isn’t here but one day a week.” Those reduced hours allow only enough time to handle special education students, the seventh grade science teacher maintained.
The RCEA also called for Spanish to be offered at the high school. “We’re very proud of the French program,” Mrs. Baines emphasized. “We don’t want to add Spanish at the expense of French . . .But with Spanish now the second language for at least the bottom third of the United States, it’s time we give it as an option for our students. ”
In addition, the Association asked for a study on the establishment of an alternative education program. Slow learners and overage students begin to be disruptive classroom influences, beginning in about the sixth grade and continuing until they are of legal age to drop out
