two months ago. A visit to the properties on Friday afternoon, before the warrants were served, revealed no footprints or vehicle tracks which would indicate anyone had been there since the snows late last month.
Mr. Neff said that he visited one of the cabins on Nov. 15 to obtain permission from Mr. Pettie to hunt on his property. He said that the door was answered by a “younger guy, in his mid to late 20b” whom he did not recognize. He went back into the house and returned with a note bearing Mr. Pettie’s name.
Mr. Neff added that in past years he had gotten permission from Mr. Pettie personally, and that he had “good conversations” with him. He said that Mr. Pettie was welldressed, appeared well-educated, quiet but seemed to epjoy talking once he started.
Two other neighbors, who requested anonymity, said that Mr. Pettie was a “very nice person, who would do anything he could for others,” but who kept to himself. They described groups of people who visited the cabins for a week or two,
