Governor Gerald L. Baliles has proclaimed February as Heart Month in Virginia, recognizing cardiovascular disease as the state’s number one killer and foremost health problem.
According to the American Heart Association, 20,591 Virginians died of some form of cardiovascular disease in 1985. Of those deaths, 16,036 were attributed to heart disease, including heart attack, and 4,555 were caused by cerebrovascular disease, including stroke.
In Rappahannock County, of the 62 deaths that year, 32 were attributed to cardiovascular disease.
The Virginia Affiliate aims to raise $4.8 million in the 1987 campaign, which will finance research, education, and programs in the 198788 fiscal year.
