The American Heart Association urges all Virginians to be aware of cardiovascular disease, its risk factors and the reality that heart disease is not restricted to those people past middle age. Infants, teenagers, young adults - anyone can be affected by cardiovascular disease, and each year it claims the lives of more than 20,000 of our friends and family. In 1985, more than 900 Virginians under the age of 50 died of cardiovascular disease.

The most common cardiovascular diseases include heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, angina pectoris, irregular heartbeat, congestive heart failure, rheumatic heart disease, and congenital heart disease. The incidence of cardiovascular
