We must first defend our country if we are truly interested in promoting the general welfare. For the state of war is antithetical to the general welfare of society. What a strange irony, that a country that embraces a philosophy of social welfare and humanitarian assistance (and even tries to protect creatures and plants that might otherwise become extinct) now seeks to neglect the most fundamental part of welfare - the prevention of war through a national defense.
Benjamin Franklin was right. “Our people certainly ought to do more for themselves. It is absurd, the pretending to be lovers of liberty while they grudge paying for the defense of it.”
