The family farm: It may symbolize a rustic refuge for many Americans. but farming can also be hazardous to your health.
Statistics compiled by the National Safety Council show that the agricultural sector has the nation’s second highest number of fatalities per 100,000 workers. At 49 work-related deaths, the sector — comprising farming, fishing, and forestry - ranked right after mining, which reported 50 fatalities in 1985.
Agriculture reported a total of 1,600 work fatalities that year; farming accounted for 900 deaths. Most of these, experts say, involved machinery - tractors in particular. One of the most common accidents occurs when the tractor rolls over sideways as a result of being turned too fast, or driven along too steep a slope. The latter, as well as a heavy load, may also cause the tractor to flip over backwards, another common accident - which is often fatal when the tractor has no protective features.
