The proposal - which was based on a poll of all teachers - applies a 13 percent increase to this year’s starting salary of $14,912 and increases of 12 to 15 percent to the other steps in the index scale. The RCEA’s recommendation would up the pay of a teacher with five years’ experience to $19,547, with 10 years to $22,075, with 15 years to $24,602, and with 25 years to $25,951.
Under the current index scale, increases after 15 years’ experience come at five-year intervals. An option presented to the teachers in the RCEA’s poll would have added extra steps in that range. But the teachers voted “for money they could see and see immediately,” Mrs. Lacava noted.
Virginia Governor Gerald Baliles has “put money where his mouth is” by providing additional state funds to pay for the 10 percent increases in teachers’ pay that he has called for in his “excellence in education” program, Mrs. Lacava said. But with just that 10 percent, “we are falling farther behind,” she told the School Board.
