Eating humble pie
During the past week, the residents of Rappahannock and Madison counties have been treated to an unusual sight in these parts - members of the news media falling all over one another in an attempt to cover a national story which suddenly took on a local angle.
The resulting spectacle should provide both print and broadcast journalists with plenty of food for thought ~ and the menu is humble pie.
The account of an unusual group known as the Finders first surfaced in Florida, and all the ingredients for a sensational story were included. Journalists filed stories on national television and in respected newspapers reeling off allegations of child sexual abuse, Satanism, cults, communal • living and brainwashing. 1 ',V
As law enforcement agencies fomwed a paperirail which I led to Washington, D. C. and-eventuaffy to Nethers Mill and Etlan, Virginia, the stories continued to appear. In many cases, the attributions for the allegations were the wellknown “sources close to the investigation.w
