The ungrouted well is located 65 feet from the septic drainfield. And while the Health Department does not currently approve private wells as such, its regulations require that a new septic field be at least 100 feet from an ungrouted well or a minimum of 50 feet from a grouted well.
At a meeting two weeks ago with members of the BZA, local sanitarian Jack Lockhart maintained that since the Health Department had previously approved a public water system for Rappahannock Lakes, he had no authority to approve any wells in the area and would not do so as long as the approval stood. That meant no reassurances on the private well and therefore, no variance.
