ceived a special certificate of achievement in the new Introduction to Latin test initiated by the National Latin Exam Committee. Recipients of this award answered correctly 30 out of 40 questions.
Five students received awards in the Classical Association of Virginia Classical Essay Contest, in which participants from across the state submitted 1,000-word essays on assigned topics. Latin I students Jeni Cressmand and Danielle Smith received second and third place awards for their essays on “Julia’s Wedding.” Writing on the same topic, sixth grader Diana Fry received honorable mention in the junior high category.
Latin II student Rob Schegel received third prize for his essay on life in Pompeii after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Rebecca Smith received honorable mention in this category.
In the Latin Essay Contest sponsored by the Classical Association of Virginia, Latin IV student Sharon Horng received honorable mention for her 200-word Latin composition on the rivers of the mythological underworld.
In the Pro Scienta Pentathlon, 11 students received awards of special recognition. This contest, sponsored by the W.T. Woodson Latin Alumni Club, drew more than 5,000 participants. The test consisted of 100 multiple-choice questions on Latin grammar, vocabulary, derivatives, culture and history.
Recipients of awards in this contest were Katrina Lindholm, Ben Martin, Amy Longyear, Christa Ann Vogel, Jenny Shanks, Kathleen O’Neill, Roberta Ohlinger, Malcolm McCurry, Katie Holland, Pam Miller and Murali Maheswaran.
