At present, forest managers must base control decisions on relatively subjective evaluations of recent population trends, defoliation history, stand susceptibility, stand vulnerability and economic considerations. Chemical control of the gypsy moth can be very effective in the short run, but susceptible trees commonly become reinfested again after a few years.
