With the services of doctors, nurses, technicians, and other staff all donated, Dr. Adams estimates that annual operating costs will be between $300,000 to $600,000 for the 40-bed hospital. That’s about one percent of what it takes to run the standard medical facility of comparable size.
It may all sound like the impossible dream with Hunter B. Adams, M.D., in the role of Don Quixote - except that it’s happening. The Gesundheit Institute bought the 310 acres in 1980. Four years ago. Dr. Adams and his compatriots began building the first structure, a 6,000 square foot shop that was completed last year. After rejections from more than 1,000 foundations, in September of 1987 the first $100,000 donation came in. Most of the contribution checks are for smaller amounts, from $10 to $50. But for the last four or five years, the yearly total has amounted to around $100,000 and last year it went up to almost $240,(XX). “We’re on the verge of getting the money we need," says Dr. Adams.
The presentation of the MAGIC ELIXIRS OF LIFE is set for Friday, May 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the Gay Street Theater in Washington, Virginia. Dr. Adams will promote his special tonics for healthy living, curiosity, love, and nature. Tickets at $3 are available from Mountainside Market in Washington. Proceeds benefit the non-profit Gesundheit Institute.
