with facts and vital statistics, and inevitably, after seeing his sustained interest, the patient began to talk about feelings. “I don’t interrupt them,” Adams says. “I’m hoping that in the course of the four hours, they get to at least one subject where they forget I’m even in the room.”
He focused on the emotions, gestures, body language. All are significant to a physician who believes that today’s most fundamental problems are boredom, loneliness, and fear.
Dr. Adams believes that the more he knows about a patient, the better he can help them. So rather than limit the interview to four hours, he prefers that a new patient come spend a week with the Adams family - Patch, Lynda and sons Zag and Zig - and other friends who share their home.
He doesn’t discount modem medicine. He takes from it freely when necessary. But he also uses acupunction, nutrition, and other approaches to health care not taught in traditional medical schools. He knows that a change in lifestyle may bring more lasting benefits with fewer adverse side effects than drugs or surgery, but he recognizes that it’s often easier to persuade a patient to take blood pressure pills than to stop sprinkling salt on food. Dr. Adams pushes, but it’s a gentle nudge rather than a hard shove.
When it opens, the lakeside hospital in West Virginia will be surrounded by flower beds and vegetable gardens. Rooms will be reserved for pottery, painting, and music. It will be a place of beauty. “Our feeling is that esthetics is healing,” Dr. Adams explains.
The medical practice at the Gesundheit Institute will be standard as well as holistic. Not all the doctors will be the kind that conduct four-hour interviews on medical history. “I am trying to hire a staff with broad points of view, so that whoever walks in there will be able to go to somebody that they can be touched by.
