Defoliation by the gypsy moth in commercial hardwood forests presents forest managers with impor‘ tant questions that are difficult to • answer: How extensive and severe is the defoliation likely to be? How « long will it last? Will it cause economic losses? Will damage be se- rious enough to warrant control? Which control measures will be cost effective, and for how long? At present these questions can be answered only in general terms.
Fall and winter egg mass surveys are used to detect the presence of gypsy moth and to predict defoliation expected the following spring. Reliability of these surveys depends upon the sampling method used, egg mass density, stand structure, weather conditions, and the infestation’s current trend. High egg mass densities usually result in severe defoliation, but accurate defoliation ^predictions are more difficult when .egg mass density is low.
