“The strategic importance of the Canal and serious concerns about Panama’s social and political instability have prompted a number of members of Congress, including my. self, to urge President Reagan to renegotiate the 1977 Panama Canal Treaty,” Rep. Slaughter explained.
“The resolution I have signed, along with over 60 members of the House, urges the President to renegotiate those portions of the Panama Canal Treaty in order to permit the premanent stationing of U.S. military forces in Panama beyond the year 2000, and which would allow the United States to act independently after the year 2000 to maintain the security of the Canal and tc guarantee its regular operation,” he said.
