However, she believes that if viewed in moderation, with guidance from discriminating adults, TV can actually become a tool to help children think more critically.
One way for parents to teach children how to think critically while viewing is to help them examine TV commercials. Ms. Cecil suggests the following activities to help children become more discerning viewers:
• Have children keep a log of TV commercials they have seen over a two-week period. Ask them how the commercials made them feel. Help children look for manipulative techniques in the advertisements.
• Perform taste tests. Have your children perform taste tests comparing two well-known products, such as hamburgers or soft drinks.
• Point out deceptive devices. Make children aware of the misleading visual and audio effects widely used on television by having them compare the actual product with the distorted version presented on the commercial. For example, the size and sounds of toys.
