Nature abhors a vacuum, and so does memory. The drive back to Washington, D.C., may have paralleled the movement of history - from open country to city - but what history tries to destroy, memory may maintain. That the preservation of cultural information can result in satisfying art is indisputable, and this may well be the unique calling of the rural artist.
