Red and silver maples, willows, poplars, and elms often clog septic lines. Plant these species well away from waterlines and sewers.
• Poison ivy is dangerous all year round. Gardeners can get an irritation from the leaves, roots, berries and even smoke from burning the vines. Learn to know the leaves to guard against it. If you think you may have come in contact with it, wash immediately with soap and water and remove any clothes that may have the oil on them. Prevention is the best medicine for this ailment.
• Don’t over water lawns this summer. Too much water leaches nitrogen from the soil, encourages w'eeds and invites disease problems.
• Creeping red fescue may be used for turf in shady, droughtprone areas. Keep this grass at two to two and a half inches in height.
