Heat syncope (SEEN-co-pee), or fainting, occurs when the body sends blood to the skin to cool, reducing blood flow to the brain. It occurs most often when a person is inactive. Once the victim has recovered, let him lie flat in a cool place.
Heat cramps are painful muscle spasms caused by physical activity in hot, humid weather. It is caused by a chemical imbalance from the loss of fluids and electrolytes through sweating. Victims need to drink plenty of water and massage affected muscles. Lightly salted water restores electrolytes. Do not take salt tablets. The body does not benefit from such a concentration of salt, and it may even be harmful.
