• Shop around for a reputable firm. Most contractors, like all businesses, are honest and do a good job. Unfortunately, a few unscrupulous people give all a bad reputation. Ask your neighbors who have had remodeling done whom they would recommend.
•Get at least three estimates for any major project. Make sure that the estimates are made on identical descriptions of work and materials.
• Before making a decision, contact the State Board of Contractors to make sure that the firm under consideration is licensed by the state to do the work planned.
•Ask the contractor for references and recommendations. Also ask if the firm is covered by liability and workman’s compensation insurance —this will protect you from liability from any accident which occurs on the project.
